Dr. Charles Toulson

Charles E. Toulson, MD, MBA, is a board-certified, fellowship trained orthopedic surgeon. Dr. Toulson specializes in adult knee reconstruction, adult knee revisions, and state-of-the-art robotic-assisted joint replacement.

Traditional Knee Replacement

Traditionally surgeons enter the knee joint through a cut along the quadriceps tendon, which is repaired with STITCHES. The quadriceps tendon is attached to the 4 major thigh muscles used in extension of the knee joint after a knee replacement. The quadriceps and quadricep tendon are essential for activities such as walking and stairs. In techniques where cutting the tendon are used, the patient is asked to start walking on it after surgery while the tendon is healing. OUCH!!

The SURRE Knee Replacement

Our surgeons enter the knee in a way that rarely cuts the quadriceps tendon or the muscles. Rather this technique "spares" the tendon of damage and special instruments help to "lift" the muscle and slide it over to enter the knee joint. Incisions are made only to the skin and the capsular tissue, not to the quadriceps tendon itself. This technique typically takes just 30 minutes to complete implantation of the new knee joint. Less trauma to the extensor mechanism and quadriceps tendon means LESS PAIN and QUICKER RECOVERY.

Additionally, the SURRE KNEE Robotic technique provides CUSTOM pre-surgical planning, PRECISE implant alignment, allowing IMPROVED ligament BALANCE and STABILITY.
